History

In 1905 -- the year before the Gospel Trumpet family moved to Anderson, Indiana -- there was a group of believers who had already taken their stand with the Church of God and began meeting together at a hall located on the south edge of town at Brown Street and Belt Railroad (now 25th Street).  This group of individuals laid the foundation for South Meridian Church of God.

During the first ten years, their meeting place changed several times.  In 1916, construction was completed on their first church-owned building at 2427 Meridian Street -- just across the street from our present site.  The first resident pastor, Rev. E.F. DuCummins, began his ministry with the congregation that same year.

In 1923, the church built a white-framed church building at the corner of 24th and Meridian Streets.  As the church continued to experience solid growth, a new gymnasium and educational unit were added.  The Chan Memorial Gym was added during the ministry of long-term pastor, Rev. William Fleenor.  And in 1960, during the ministry of Dr. Warren Roark, the old white church was demolished to make way for the new sanctuary.

An unforgettable piece of South Meridian's history is the "Great Revival" that took place in February 1970.  A vivid display of God's presence spread from our church to the entire city during that time. The revival began when Pastor Charles Tarr invited a group of students from Asbury College to come share about the revival they were experiencing on campus. Night after night, for eight weeks, standing room only crowds filled our sanctuary.  Many lives were changed by this revival of love.

Our mission heart was greatly expanded with the Faith Promise mission emphasis initiated by Pastor Paul Hart, and it continues to this day.  The next pastor, Emmit Whalen, led the church in adding much needed fellowship, education and office space. Following his tenure, Pastor Gary Ausbun led the church in purchasing property south of Anderson for possible future relocation. His successor, Pastor David Shultz, help to reinvigorate the spirit of the church and develop plans for future ministry.

This is our heritage! It speaks to us of commitment and courage, of faith and fortitute, of sacrifice and Christian service. But ultimately, what we're really all about is loving God and loving people!

Come join us!
